I come from a background of team and contact sports. Having played rugby, hurling and gaelic football all though his teens, I then took up coaching in my early twenties. I subsequently coached many rugby teams including various age groups at UL Bohemians and my college senior team.

Since arriving in New Zealand I have competed in the Auckland Xterra Trail Running series. I have recently taken up Crossfit, where I met with Coach and Many Miles for Mary founder James Milne. I am currently competing in the Crossfit Games Open 2011.

Why do you want to run?
Just over 12 months ago I weighted over 165kgs and the prospect of doing an event such as Many Miles for Mary was unthinkable. Meeting James Milne has changed my life and I wanted to be involved in this amazing event as a challenge to myself but also as a statement of gratitude for everything he has done for me. I have never been an endurance athlete but the opportunity to training with some amazing athletes and the chance to raise money for such a worthy cause was too much to pass up.

What are you most looking forward to?
The training and the camaraderie that comes with such an event; the sense of achievement that I know I will feel at the end and the positive impact the funds raised will have for our charity.

What are you least looking forward to?
Aching limbs and bones; the fear of the unknown; not to mention the creative training Coach J has in store for us.

Give one interesting fact we didn’t know about you?
I spent 12 weeks in Sri Lanka rebuilding an orphanage after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
