Runner : Andrew ‘Flea’ Koolen

Age: 39
Weight: 83kg
Height: 173cm
Nationality: New Zealand

Sporting background: I have been active in one form or another for most of my life. I have had a diverse list of pursuits either in or out of the water. At twelve years of age I was New Zealand springboard champion and completed several triathlons in my teens. I was one of New Zealand’s top wakeboarders in my twenties.

At thirty years of age I lost 30kgs and after reading Dean Karnazes ‘Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner’ I was inspired to take up running. Most of my running has been done off road having completed the Cape Brett Challenge and the Auckland Xterra off road series.

What are you most looking forward to?
The challenge and everything that goes with it. Be it the training, the physical journey or the mental aspect of putting my body through this experience. I am also looking forward to the positive changes the training will have on my body.

What are you least looking forward to?
Ask me that after day 9….

Give one interesting fact we didn’t know about you?
I have been New Zealand Powerboat Lite champion for the last two years.
