Reserve Runner : Sandy

Age: Is just a number
Weight: Just another number
Height: A number that is not high enough compared to the Weight number
Nationality: Kiwi

Sporting background: Softball, Netball, Rugby, Triathlon, Running.

Till my forties I had mostly played team sports with a particular passion for rugby. This gave me the opportunity of playing in, and travelling to, a number of countries. Once I retired it was on to new adventures. I got into running, a bit of cycling and eventually triathlon as activities that didn’t involve having to turn up to practices at particular times, but could be done when it suited. I found that the endurance events were those that appealed and suited my abilities the most.

Why do you want to run?
When I first met Coach Jamie in October 2010 he enthusiastically mentioned his charity event Many Miles for Mary. Even on that first meeting I thought what a fabulous event and one I’d love to take part in – ‘pick me’ I nearly said then and there. I just loved his reason for instigating such a run and the fact that he was doing it for great causes each year, and not just self-fulfillment. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to be a participant so am very excited about being included this year as part of the wider team.

What are you most looking forward to?
The journey really – pushing my limits in both the training and lead up events using the Crossfit methodology. It is also so cool to be back in a team environment again. The guys are a great bunch, so lots of fun will be had amongst the hard work I am sure.

What are you least looking forward to?
Not being able to keep up with the guys in training.

Give one interesting fact we didn’t know about you?
I have represented both New Zealand and England at sport – but not in the same sport.
